History of Wilton It was once part of the "Bargo Bush," also known as "East Bargo," and was unpopulated. The current townsite was built to suppress nearby bushrangers. It was named Wilton after notable local magistrate William Antill's Jarvisfield property near Picton, which he owned. Due to the inflow of workers building the Upper Nepean water supply scheme, a public school was established in 1871, a post office in 1872, and enough population in 1885 made it possible to be proclaimed as a town.
