Overview Bittern is a rural suburb in Metropolitan Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula located 82 kilometres southeast of Melbourne's famous Central Business District. It is also a part of the local government area of the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. Bittern is neighboured by the following localities: Tuerong, Balnarring, Somers, Hastings, Western Point, Crib Point, and HMAS Cerberus. As of the 2016 census, the population of Bittern was 3,704.

History of Bittern The town of Bittern was named after the Australian Bittern, a wetland bird. It used to be part of the Coolart pastoral run of the 1860s. The Bittern Railway Station opened on 17 December 1889. The Bittern Post Office was opened on 5 January 1891. Small scale commercial development began in the town during the early 1900s.
