Living in Booral As a coastal area, Booral offers picturesque views of the surrounding waters. There are three main residential sections, though the site is mainly industrial because of its closeness to the Great Sandy Strait. Accordingly, most of the employment stems from saltwater aquaculture, which covers the farming of soft-shell crabs, sea cucumbers, and fish. Moreover, a vast part of the area is still tree-studded, enriching the serene ambience of the locality. The area also has its own Booral Community Association, an alliance of volunteers seeking to promote the interests of the locals.
History of Booral “Booral” is a Kabi term that defines as tall, while “Burrall” means a location for shell mounds. The locality earned this name because there were a lot of shell mounds at the foreshore, which was associated with the earlier settlers. They lived in the area for more than 6,000 years, banqueting on shellfish. These Aboriginal people also trade shellfish with bunya nuts from the Bunya Mountains. In the 1850s, one of the oldest structures in the town, the Booral Homestead, was established by Edgar Thomas Aldridge.
