History of Caloundra Caloundra is located in the Gabi-Gabi linguistic area. Its name is derived from the Kabi dialect Cullowundoor, where Kal Owen means deciduous tree (Gmelina Leichhardtii), and Dha means city. Petrie Point Wickham conducted a hydrographic study of Moreton Bay's northern portion in 1846 and subsequently served as the Government Residency of Moreton Bay between 1853 to 1859. Point Wickham was used by 1860, as shown by its inclusion on government charts. On an 1892 chart, it is labelled as "Caloundra Head (Wickham Point)," At some juncture afterwards, the term Caloundra Head gained popularity, and the name Point Wickham seems to have been dropped.
