History of Harkness William Scott Harkness, a native of Scotland, was regarded as the founder of Harkness, which got its name after his surname. He reached Melbourne in 1852, and after some pretty jobs, he came to manage a property now located at Greigs Road of the Strathtulloh suburb to the south of Melton. Harkness bought some farmland in the area and soon became the prominent estate owner, referred to by his surname even after he died in 1908.

The Harkness estate grew into a neighbourhood after developers bought lands in the area, and it has become a part of Melbourne's outer rural-urban fringe.
