History of Melton Melton derives its name from Melton Mowbray, a picturesque town in England's Leicestershire. Settlers moved to the area with their sheep in the 1830s, as the volcanic plain between Mount Cottrell and Mount Kororoit offered reasonable grazing grounds.

The Victorian Gold Rush led to a rise in settlements in the commuter hub strategically located on the way to the Ballarat goldfields. Melton got its first post office in 1856.
