Overview Melton South is one of the seven suburban areas of Melton, a western suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. Located at a distance of 37 km from Melbourne's Central Business District, this educational and transport hub became part of the Greater Melbourne metropolitan area in 2010. Surrounded by Brookfield, Melton West and Cobbleblank, Melton South had a population of 11,517 in 2016.
History of Melton South Melton South is the oldest part of the Melton suburban area, and early settlements dated back to the 1830s. Sparsely populated, then it mainly had sheep runs. However, its favourable location on the road leading to the Ballarat goldfields helped the area grow, and a post office was set up in January 1917.
When Melton area got the satellite city status in 1974, the area became its centre of transport. Soon many educational institutions came into existence, and the area saw a rapid transformation in the 1990s as a preferred and cost-effective residential area for the growing middle class.
