History of Herne Hill Earlier, Herne Hill was not that developed, but the area started to grow after World War II. In 1954 and 1955, the State primary and Catholic primary schools were opened. In 1954, a State technical school opened in the area. The Catholic Brigidine Sisters opened a convent and Clonard College in 1956. In 1933, the orphan asylum site was acquired by Portland Cement.
