Overview Newtown is a suburb of Geelong, a well-known sports and leisure destination and Victoria’s second-biggest urban centre. Located 3 km west of the Geelong CBD and 80 km southwest of Melbourne, Newtown was a separate municipality until 1993. The position of Newtown on a higher elevation overlooking the Geelong coast makes it home to many desirable housing estates. There were 10,155 residents in the suburb at the 2016 census.

History of Newtown Like other parts of Geelong, Newtown was ruled by the Wadawurrung Aboriginals at the European arrival in 1802. The area first hosted a penal colony but grew during the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s. The hill of Newtown became home to the city’s elite as Geelong expanded and hosted the annual Geelong Highland Gathering. In 1858, Newtown and Chilwell were clubbed as a municipality. By 1911, the area had its first post office. The City of Newtown officially came into existence in 1967 though it was registered as a township in 1924. Newtown was integrated into Geelong as a suburb in 1993.
