History of Highton The suburb of Highton was named after John Highett. He arrived in the district in 1836 and built a home on Montpellier hill with an overlooking view of the river. Eventually, his house was converted into a vineyard, hotel, and picnic ground. By the 1860s, this area was subdivided, and its population increased to 300.
