Overview Located 7 km north of the Brisbane CBD, Kalinga is an inner suburb of Brisbane. Kalinga had 2,126 residents at the 2016 census. Kedron Brook flows along its northern boundary while Wavell Heights, Nundah, Clayfield and Kedron surround the suburb.
Living in Kalinga Kalinga is a residential suburb surrounded by parks. This well-connected and serviced suburb is positioned between the majestic Clayfield and Wooloowin suburbs. Kalinga is close to both the Brisbane CBD and the airport; residents can reach either in less than 10 minutes. It is home to multiple recreational facilities, lots of parks, tree-lined streets, boutique cafes, restaurants and aesthetically designed homes. Kalinga residents have numerous large-shopping arcades within 5-10 minutes. Transport services are brilliant, while Kalinga Park has a huge playground, picnic facilities and jogging/bike track.
History of Kalinga Kalinga is a misspelling of the Aboriginal word Ngalinnga meaning "belonging to us". The Yuggera-speaking indigenous tribes were living in the area when Europeans in the 1830s. In 1838, a German Mission Station came up in the present-day Kalinga Park. After the mission was closed, Kalinga was surveyed for settlements in 1851. Alfred Lutwyche was an early settler in the area and was granted huge tracts of land. In 1888, his estate was auctioned, allowing more people to buy land in Kalinga. The suburb was connected to Brisbane with electric tram services in 1928. Kalinga housed an army camp during World War II. It became a separate suburb in 2015 following its separation from Wooloowin.
