History of Wavell Heights In 1935, the Methodist Church bought four parcels of land in Rode Road and opened a building meant for launching all sorts of church activities. It became known as the West Nundah Church. The church was extended in 1947 to accommodate more people. However, the congregation continued to grow; thus, few more churches were opened to cater to them. In 1941, the Brisbane City Council renamed the area of West Nundah to Wavell Heights in honour of Field Marshal Lord Wavell, the Commander-In-Chief of the Allied Forces in the Middle East during World War II. Most of Wavell Heights’ housing stock consists of post-war housing, now being reconstructed as spaces for modern houses.
