Overview Lake Gardens is on Ballarat’s western rural-urban fringe; this suburb is comparatively new and comes under Victoria, Australia. It lies close to Lake Wendouree and directly behind the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, where the suburb got its name. Gillies Street bounds the suburb to the eastern side, and O’Donnell’s Road borders the west.
Living in Lake Gardens As per the 2016 census, the suburb had 1,695 people. It is primarily residential, with no commercial area and the closest shopping centres in Wendouree and Alfredton. It would come as no surprise that Lake Gardens has spectacular greenery within the suburb, with the Botanical Gardens a must-see for locals and visitors alike.
History of Lake Gardens Winter Swamp and Black Swamp once had this suburb in between them, and it was open marshy land that was flat. The indigenous tribes of Wathaurong used it as their hunting land. From 1877, on the Reformatory Reserve, a psychiatric asylum named Lakeside Mental Hospital was built. Subsequently to its closure, a planning provision was made by the City of Ballarat to bring a new suburb to that site. Early 2000 marks the beginning of its work.
