Overview Lambton is a suburb located in the LGA of the City of Newcastle. It is situated eight kilometres away from Newcastle’s central business district and is neighboured by Jesmond, North Lambton, Waratah, Wallsend, Broadmeadow, New Lambton Heights, and New Lambton.

History of Lambton It is recognised that the Awabakal and Worimi groups are the original custodians of the land where Lambton is situated.
Lambton was originally a coal-mining township until it was incorporated as a Municipality on 24 June 1871. During its early years, Lambton was known as a venue for dog races, which miners called “Dog & Rat”, as a rat (wallaby) was released on an open area, and dogs would be let out to chase it down.
In the early 20th century, Lambton already had 14 churches, a music hall and a bank, courthouse and public schools.
