History of Wallsend According to Lt. Edward Close, founder of the suburb of Morpeth, the area where Wallsend is located was called "Barrahinebin" by its original inhabitants - the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal groups. Close described the land in his report as an area bounded by the Hunter River, Ironbark Creek and Mt. Sugarloaf.
However, the suburb's current name was derived after Wallsend in England, which was a coal mining township. Alexander Brown, who purchased the land around the 1850s, was the one who gave the suburb's name. Brown purchased the land to operate his business called the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal company.
The coal mined in Wallsend was of high quality, which played a massive role in the suburb's development as a commercial hub today.
