History of Lilydale Lilydale is named after Lilly de Castella, a prominent early settler in the region and daughter of a pioneer landowner in South Yarra. Lilly's mother, Marry Anderson, was among the founders of the Melbourne Mechanics Institute. Initially, the area was part of the Kulin Aboriginal nation. Lilydale was surveyed in 1860, and a post office was set up there. It was followed by a hotel in 1862, a railway station in 1882 and the town hall in 1888.
