Overview Lilydale is a town 30 km west of Melbourne's CBD. This suburb in Victoria is a major urban centre in the Yarra Valley and is considered a part of the outer-west of the Melbourne metropolitan. It is also the headquarters of the Lilydale Shire. The population stood at 15,530 at the 2016 census. Lilydale is home to both residential and industrial zones. The town was associated with Lilydale Cemetery, the final resting place of Dame Nellie Melba, Australia's first singer to gain international recognition.

History of Lilydale Lilydale is named after Lilly de Castella, a prominent early settler in the region and daughter of a pioneer landowner in South Yarra. Lilly's mother, Marry Anderson, was among the founders of the Melbourne Mechanics Institute. Initially, the area was part of the Kulin Aboriginal nation. Lilydale was surveyed in 1860, and a post office was set up there. It was followed by a hotel in 1862, a railway station in 1882 and the town hall in 1888.
