History of McDowall McDowall was named after Colonel John McDowall, one of the early settlers in the area. The Brisbane City Council wanted to originally name this suburb Annand to honour Colonel Frederick Annand. The residents disapproved of the idea but instead wanted to name it after the newly opened school- the McDowall State School, which opened in 1975.
