Newtown shares borders with a few neighbouring suburbs, namely East Ipswich, Booval, Ipswich, Eastern Heights, and Silkstone.

History of Newtown The name of this suburb is taken from John Rankin’s Newtown Estate. This estate was subdivided and sold in 1865. Before 1990, the northern boundary of Newtown was Glebe Street, but it was changed to Brisbane Road. The first school in Newtown opened in 1882 but was moved to a new location in 1915.
