History of Wilsonton Wilsonton was officially named in 1981 and remodelled in 2006 after the gazettal of Wilsonton Heights as a separate suburb. The suburb's name is believed to praise James T. Wilson, who was a businessman and supporter of the Toowoomba Agricultural Society. In 1972, the Wilsonton Hotel-Motel was opened and became one of the leading outlets for liquor sales in Queensland. Later in 1976, a shopping centre also opened in the area.
