History of Oakhurst Before its official declaration as a residential suburb by the New South Wales State Government in 1981, Oakhurst was a rural township, primarily farming vegetables and poultry. At some point during the time of its residential development, the Land Commission of New South Wales named the town 'The Oaks Estate' to commemorate a historic estate located in the area. After the residential development of Oakhurst, the NSW Geographical Name Board changed the name of the town to 'Hassall,' to which the locals resisted. The disapproval of the locals led to the immediate change of the town's name to 'Oakhurst.'
