History of Toongabbie Toongabbie has a deep-rooted history being the third area settled after the European invasion in 1788. Its name stemmed from an Aboriginal word that means the “meeting of the waters” or “place by the water”. And in 1792, the official title was established by Governor Arthur Philip during this inquiry with the locals. Many developments occurred in the 18th century, including the establishment of the railway in 1860 and the opening of the post office in 1887. From the 1900s, detached homes were replaced by apartment blocks.
