Overview Maroubra is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and is 10 kilometres away from the Sydney central business district. This beachside suburb is home to 30,688 people based on the 2016 census. The suburbs surrounding Maroubra are Kingsford, Randwick, South Coogee, Pagewood, Coogee, Hillsdale, Matraville, and Malabar.
Living in Maroubra One of the most visited sites in the suburb is Maroubra beach, the second Australian beach named a National Surfing Reserve. The beach has been host to several surfing competitions and other events, such as the 2007 Beach Cricket series. Around the beach are several shopping districts, cafes and restaurants, as well as the Bay Hotel. However, the main shopping area is the Maroubra Junction, where there is an outdoor eating area, major supermarkets, and specialty shops.
History of Maroubra Maroubra is an Aboriginal word that means “place of thunder”. It was in 1861 when Humprey Mckeon built the very first house in the area. Years after, several settlers arrived in the suburb to work in the wool washing industry.
The suburb made headlines on 6 May 1989 when the full-rigged iron ship “Hereward” shipwrecked off Maroubra Beach. A street in the suburb was named after the event.
In the early 1900s, significant residential developments took place, which shaped Maroubra as it is today.
