History of Riverwood Riverwood consisted of small land grants and was initially called Herne Bay. During World War II, the area was redeveloped when the Government of Australia built an army base hospital for the U.S. army. When the war ended, and the military departed, the hospital was turned over to the Housing Commission in 1946. The facility was converted into public housing to address housing shortages.
