Overview Riverwood is a suburb located in southern Sydney and is part of the St. George area. The suburb is located 18 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. It is home to 12,103 people, based on the 2016 census.

History of Riverwood Riverwood consisted of small land grants and was initially called Herne Bay. During World War II, the area was redeveloped when the Government of Australia built an army base hospital for the U.S. army. When the war ended, and the military departed, the hospital was turned over to the Housing Commission in 1946. The facility was converted into public housing to address housing shortages.
