It is 16 kilometres southwest of the Sydney CBD. It is neighboured by Wiley Park, Belmore, Lakemba, Kingsgrove, Punchbowl, Narwee, and Riverwood.
Roselands was established in 1987 and had a population of 11,579 people (2016 census).

Roselands was formerly part of the Punchbowl suburb. Both suburbs share the same postcode (2196). It officially became an independent suburb in 1986 after some members of parliament and residents campaigned to make it one. Roselands got its name from the plant nursery that originally stood in the area.
